Gasp yes another level crossing accident! Why is practical level crossing safety NOT a mandatory requirement of having a motor vehicle drivers license? Basic knowledge testing is one thing, but to have continual incidents where people are being killed at level crossings for whatever reason is not really an acceptable outcome.

I think there should be a closed section of railway line set up to simulate possible situations and everyone should have to pass a special testing program based on this practical training scenario. In fact it should be part of normal advanced driver training which should be a mandatory part of getting a full drivers license! 8-)

I suspect VIC will end up adopting the pussy-foot method being used more and more here in NSW which is to put permanent railway speed restrictions at certain level crossings so the trains have to slow down thereby making the train crews bear some or all of the responsibity for any accidents that might occur. argh
